Motivation to get or stay fit,
Reasons to travel (Solo or with others),
Be part of something larger than Yourself,
Or you are just the creeper looking to see fit people in tight clothes...
Hear me out, even though I Am one of those crazy gym rat people,
I didn't become one of those crazy racers until the Fall of 2012 when I ran my first Obstacle Course Race.
It was a Tough Mudder at the racetrack in Englishtown NJ, a grueling 12 mile course with over 25 obstacles along the way.
What on Earth made me decide to sign up for one of those mud runs that you get electrocuted during?
Crazy I know!! Just look -------->
I had people ask me if i was doing it,
I had people tell me how great I would be at it,
There were a few things that always held me back from signing up though...
This particular race was always in November, which in NJ means there is a good chance of a hypothermia after going through an obstacle known as the
Arctic Enema and then coming out into sometimes freezing NJ temperatures.
Add onto the fact that the race itself was 12 miles long
A distance I was always fearful of doing because I convinced myself that if I did too much cardio I would lose the lean muscle mass and strength I had developed.
*Even as a fitness professional,
*Side note: This obviously was a myth I had built up in my head that kept me from doing a sport I now love doing, so please ask for help.
There are always ways around the beliefs we have built up in our own heads, we sometimes just needed the guidance of those who know more than us!
PS- Check out the video of me explaining what does work best to optimize fat burn. I did a short talk on this topic recently.

When the race switched to mid-October I started to consider signing up.
Then a client of mine asked me to join him and the team he was on called Team Braveheart. He was going through a divorce at the time and was looking for some additional support and accountability from me.
With a little push from a former client and now good friend, I had signed up for my very first obstacle course race and the longest distance I had ever competed in.
I now had the hardest part out of the way...Signing up and committing!
**First Step I take all my client through in my No Regrets Lifestyle Planner**
Now the "easy" part (planing out a training schedule) to complete the distance and
not look foolish or out of shape doing it.
I know a lot of you are thinking,
"You work out all the time, HOW could you ever feel out of shape?"
I promise you, feeling like this happens to all of us!
Let's stop assuming if someone exercises regularly they are in shape...
Being in shape does NOT mean you are ready to take on a challenge or activity that you are interested in.
Being in shape means you have found a form of exercise you enjoy and are consistent in doing that exercise modality.
No matter how prepared you feel for you first or 100th race, traveling for the 1st or 100th trip, taking part in your 1st or 100th event,
Those good butterfly's and the occasional self doubt will still creep in...
Once that journey starts, the excitement and the preparation/planning will take over and you'll be focused on only one thing.
Some of them are going to feel incredible,
Some of them will absolutely suck,
They will all create a memory and experience that will last a lifetime though!
I'll be honest with you too..
I know many people, including myself, who said they would never do another one even after that feeling of self-accomplishment from finishing a race/event/trip.
Then next thing you know, you're already signed up for your next big race/event/trip, and the planning starts all over!
Unless of course you just absolutely hated the experience and are good with a one and done <cough> me and triathlon's <cough> Ugh excuse me lol.
Since signing up for that 1st Obstacle Course Race I completed so many races I've lost count, including ones I said I would NEVER do!
(ie- half marathon, Spartan Beast, Spartan Ultra, 2 races in one day, etc)
I've also helped numerous others hop in their first race, improve their results in their next races, and hosted events that inspired people to FINALLY get Motivated and take action!
Pictured: Me and Devon after completing one of her first events.
Which helped jumpstart her health and fitness journey and gave her the motivation she was constantly juggling to maintain!
When you don't have something to look forward to or that's going to challenge you, motivation can easily drop.
