How many of you have said one or more of these, or something along the same line?
The reason people don't hit these types of goals is because they are surface level, generalized goals with no real meaning behind them.
And even worse...
Everybody wants them, says them because it's what we think someone else wants to hear, Which means they aren't personalized to YOU.
It's Simpler than you think...
All you have to do is ask the question, "Why?"
And then repeat 5 times or until you can no longer answer the question.
Here's an example of what I mean...
Goal: I really just want to lose 5-10 lbs...
WHY?
Because my clothes aren't fitting just right yet, and...
Yo-yo dieting:
A cycle of short-term changes in eating and activity. That leads to only short term benefits of weight loss or strength gains and results in landing in the same place or worse than when you started.
Have you ever experience that with your diet or your workouts?
The first experience I had with Yo-Yo'ing results, was when I first started really working out in with Jay a friend/colleague/coach in High School.
We'd meet up before lifeguarding every morning at 6am.
He was older and more experienced with workouts than I was so I would follow the routines he had in place.
And I can remember being annoyed at how much stronger he was than me.
Which of course means I pushed through the times I was at the gym with him, and then avoided certain exercises when I wasn't with him because I was embarrassed with how light the weight was that I was putting up by myself.
Doing that led him to getting stronger and me staying the same or going...
Have you ever started on a new goal/project and went WAAAAY too fast right out the gate and couldn't keep up that pace?
Whether a project at work, a race over the weekend, or kickstarting that weight loss goal during your companies Biggest Loser Challenge, we've all done it.
Sprinted right out the gate, only to have our pace slowed down and possibly come to a screeching halt!
It's something I do every year with the Manasquan Turkey Trot and I've finally realized why.
This realization made me wonder how many people are making this same mistake that I did and how can I help identify it so that you don't make the same mistake.
With this particular race, it is so packed with people that I refuse to start in the back or middle of the pack.
It annoys me having to weave in and out of the people who have no intention of running or just happen to be much slower than me.
With my excitement and absolute hatred of getting stuck in...
Have you ever said, "I'm too old to be doing something like that."
Or "I would love to do that, but I have no one that would do it with me."
Keep that second one PG please, or don't completely up to you...
The point is that as we get older 2 things usually happen,
And because of those 2 things happening we start letting the excuses come in which stop us from experiencing the activities we enjoyed at a younger age.
All because we THINK we are too old, or we just don't want to do it alone.
What typically comes to mind when you think about getting older?
When was the last time you turned your backyard into a pirate ship sailing across the open seas, boarding unassuming ships and looting all the treasure.
Leaving only 1 to tell the tale of your legendary name?
Maybe the backyard became the Death Star with Luke, Princess Leia, and Hans Solo battling Darth Vader and the Dark side of the force in an epic light saber battle using the wiffle ball bats found in the garage.
Or perhaps you were in the basement, aka the sewers, shouting Cowabunga Dude as you scarfed down some pizza while battling the Shredder and his evil henchman, the Foot.
As kids there was no shortage of adventure to be had because our imaginations ran wild
All that was needed was a cape (bath towel), an eye patch (broken sunglasses), a sword (any long object, ie- stick, bat, etc), and your sibling or one of the kids in the neighborhood to play with.
As adults we get to go back to that state of mind once a year... Halloween!
Halloween we...
Every year around October my college has their Homecoming, as all colleges do, and I get excited because I get to go back and relive my glories days as a Springboard diver.
Which means myself and a bunch of other 30, 40, 50, and some 60 year old former swimmers and divers have to dust off their old bathing suits...
See if they can squeeze their current body into a bathing suit they wore in their late Teen's and early 20's...
And then compete against their College Age counterparts.
Now some of the Alumni have stayed in shape and go back to compare themselves to the 18, 19, 20, and 21 year olds... <cough> this might be where I fall into <cough>
But a majority of the Alumni have let life's responsibilities come into play, have somewhat let themselves go, but are still...

Unless you stayed away from social media or the news, this past weekend we saw
Eliud Kipchoge not only beat the fastest marathon time, but shatter it!
It was an unofficial race because of 5 pacers, the hydration/nutrition being provided, and it was an unofficial course, but
With all that preparation, planning, and execution he was able to do what NO ONE in the world has been able to do yet.
Break the 2 hour mark for a 26.2 mile run. He did it in 1:59:40, just under a 4:34 min/mile pace. In case you were wondering.
What I love about this,
Isn’t the fact that he is the 1st person to break the 2 hour mark…
Isn’t the fact that there is a new “unofficial” marathon record...
Nor is it the fact that the human body and mind are capable of ANYTHING we set out to achieve…
What I love about this is that I know exactly how he...
I completed a race I said I would never in my life do for the 3rd time now.
13+ grueling miles and 30+ obstacles throughout the unforgiving elevation at Killington Ski resort in Vermont.
The nice weather hits, kids are out of school, you have time to take off of work, and want to do it all!
Every year we do this...
Start dreaming about all the activities we want to get out and do,
All the places we want to visit,
All the people we want to see.
Our heads are literally in the clouds just thinking
about everything we are going to accomplish and do
this summer that we missed out on the year before.
What are you looking to do more of this Summer?
We all have goals and dreams we want to accomplish, unfortunately most of us will fall a little short of these dreams.
I'll discuss what gets in our way and stops us from living out the...
I don't know about you but as an Obstacle Course Racing athlete, one of my least favorite things to do is CARDIO!!!
I'd rather train obstacles and strength all day, but unfortunately cardio plays a huge role when it comes to finishing a race without death looming over you once you cross that finish line.
The question then becomes what do you do to make cardio less of a chore and keep you motivated to do it?
There are many ways around this, except when NJ, or any other Northern area, decides that it wants to be its own Arctic Enema and keep you from being able to run outdoors.
One of my favorite pieces of cardio equipment is the
Technogym SkillRun, because of the Bootcamp option!
This allows me to replicate the physiological aspects that I would experience on the course into my indoor workouts.
I can seamlessly switch from running or walking (from -3% decline to 25% incline), to a weighted Sled Push, or wind sprints with a Parachute......
